Understanding the Capital Gains Tax Calculator
In Germany, capital gains are taxed at a flat rate of 25% plus a Solidarity Surcharge and potentially Church Tax. But the calculation can get tricky if you are subject to the Church Tax.
Church Tax Deduction
Under German law, Church Tax is deductible as a 'special expense'. This means that if you pay it, your base 25% tax rate is computationally reduced to roughly 24.5%. This is why having Church Tax does not increase your total tax by a full 8% or 9%.
Exemption Order (Sparer-Pauschbetrag)
Every taxpayer in Germany has a tax-free allowance for capital gains. Singles get 1,000€ and married couples assessed jointly get 2,000€. Any gains up to this amount are completely tax-free.
